A hot water system is usually worth repairing when it is under about eight years old and the fault is a part such as an element, thermostat, valve or thermocouple. Turn off the cold water isolation valve at the unit, then switch off the power at the switchboard for an electric system or turn the gas control to off for a gas system. Keep clear of the relief valve outlet, as the water can be scalding, and call us.
A few drips while the system heats can be normal, because the water expands as it warms. A constant flow, or a valve that runs all day, points to high pressure or a worn valve and needs checking.
